What To Do With the Briefing Room?

Posted by Nicholas Beaudrot of Electoral Math

In addition to agreeing with, well, little ol' me that the hunting accident may have been a better A1 story than the Iraq war, the Medicare bill, or the budget, Jay Rosen hits on the key point on display during Cheneyshotaguyintheface-gate. The Bush approach to press relations is radically different from any previous President, and the press corps either can't tell or doesn't care:

Other White Houses had a “line of the day” they wanted to push. None had a spokesman like Scott McClellan who, no matter what the question, will mindlessly repeat the line of the day as a way of showing journalists that they have no rights to an answer. That isn’t “spin,” although it may superficially look like spin. That’s shutting down the podium and emptying out the briefing room without saying you’re doing it.

To the Bush team, the national press corps isn't an independent body; it's simply another medium for propogating the Presidential message. Reading transcripts, one wonders why the reporters bother showing up anymore; after all, they have other work and other potential sources. Perhaps they're trying to find a way to hack the McLellatron 3000 (for which I'd give credit to the originator, but google is being uncooperative) and think that with just one more shot in the briefing room, they'll ask just the right question that crashes its security system, giving them access to the codes for Zion's mainframe. Or the Presidential Daily Briefings. Or ... something.

Constructive reactions to the Bush rules of government/media relations are hard to come by; Rosen suggests that the press has avoided reacting negatively to avoid the appearance of seeming too political. But that decision can be un made. Individual media members could certainly decide that they can get greater credibility and ratings by antagonizing the executive the way Keith Olbermann has. But even without such changes, there is already at least one workable model for the press corps' new role: the "Investigative reporter" on local news. If you've ever watched it, you know this character, the man (or woman) on the 6:00 news who is always digging up sensationalist headlines about seemingly small potatoes: fradulent recycling companies, individual sex offenders, gang graffiti in air cargo holds, ... stuff that's surely a nuisance, but not world-ending. He finds a provacative topic, shoves his camera in the face of someone for official comment, and more often than not finds a security guard trying to cover the lens. It's this style ... though not the substance ... that DC reporters could start emulating. They would have change their writing patterns to give greater weight to independent, sometimes partisan, analysis rather than official statements. They would have to react to evasive maneuvers with harsher coverage, as we saw to some extent with Cheny's shooting incident. And they would have to give up existing favorable coverage-for-access relationships, which currently fail to yield accurate reporting. None of these ideas are groundbreaking; if Dana Milibank would like to teach his colleagues how its done, he just has to point them to the local news.

Any "journalist" who kowtows to the Bush propaganda machine in order to protect their "access," which means they get fed the same bullshit, only one-on-one, is a tool.

Oh, wait.

As I said over at Brad DeLong's place in response to Jay's post, a lot could be achieved if reporters just reported the obfuscation that goes on in the gaggle. Often they do get quite confrontational with McClellan in the gaggle, and he just repeats those meaningless catchphrases: "I disagree with your characterisation", "The president's views are well known", "We've already addressed that" and my personal favourite, "The American people want us to focus on the real priorities". No, Scott, they want the president's press secretary to answer the goddamn question, and if the press reported all that bullshit then more people might understand quite how absurd these guys' message control freakery is.

bushcheney may very well love this story being worried by all the commentators and blogsters ... it has just become sillier and sillier (I myself am totally guilty of silliness on this one having done a silly piece on Cheney using the "javelina excuse" ... meanwhile ... ever bit of distraction from serious problems and stories is victory for the propagandafascists ... who are trying to sell and even more inadequate form of healthcare ... avoid torture stories or say they are old news ... avoid inquiries into domestic spying ... etc. ... yep ... speaking of the nsa ... it looks pretty much like the only scrutiny remains self-scrutiny ...

Imagine if it had been Bill Clinton who shot his friend while hunting. The WH press corp would be falling over each other to ask how poor Bill is feeling.

This story turned out to be a positive for the administration. Like the Alito hearings where the Democratic Senators made asses of themselves, this time the press, the liberal press, the hate Bush/Cheney press, the 80% Democrat press are attacking a man who was involved in an accident. At the same time, Democratic congressman are attacking the same man. Normal people look at this behavior with disgust and sympathize with Cheney.

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in 2006.

If the press wanted real answers to real questions - and considering that they almost never get anything from McClellan - they would just not go to the twice daily briefings, or send the lowest ranking person in their teams to attend (maybe just an admin person to record what is said).

But the media people really don't care, so they go anyway, because that is their 'beat' - what they get paid for.

I guess it could be argued that a democratic republic could function well without any press function - why have an independent press if all they do is repeat the administration party line. No press at all would surely be an improvement over a media that just repeats the Bu$hCo party line or accepts the BS that McClellan shovels out on a daily basis.

Maybe liberals and progressives (after losing yet more elections in 06 and 08) should concentrate on taking over the dead body of MSNBC or CNN with a buyout financed by individual contributions.

It would only take 1 million people contributing $100 to put together a $100 million purchase offer, which is surely more than either of those networks are worth. But whatever it takes, a cable network purchase is within reach of the people if that is the only solution to getting out the facts that the current networks conceal.

What kills me is people like Jimmy-boy who think the press is some fourth branch of government and has all of these rights to this and rights to that.
Jimmy.....the press has one right and that is the right to report the facts........and that is their job. That's it! REPORT FACTS. Now, the question is....are they fairly reporting the facts? Yes? No?

Maybe liberals and progressives (after losing yet more elections in 06 and 08) should concentrate on taking over the dead body of MSNBC or CNN with a buyout financed by individual contributions.

What Jimmy wants is a liberal propaganda machine. Instead, he should look internally and ask why Democrats keep losing elections........and it's the message. Change the message, Jimmy, give the voters what they want instead of what *YOU* want and your party will be in power.

Fred,

No matter how many elections they lose, no matter how many referendums they lose, it doesn't matter. The liberals know they are right.

It is the American people who are out of touch and not smart enough to understand the message. Isn't that right Jim?

Posted by: Captain Toke | Feb 17, 2006 12:24:44 PM

Well, Jim......is that it?

Very good point Ginger Yellow. When we see David Gregory on the Nightly News, he does not indicate in any way how the press briefing went down. The only place to see this would be watching CSPAN press briefings (yawn) or The Daily Show, which is worlds more entertaining.
