We've Lost Our King of Comedy
By Pepper of the Daily Pepper
I know it seemed like he was dead, so he and his wife even aired a special on Comedy Central called I Ain't Dead Yet, #*%$#@!!, but Richard Pryor's death shook everyone up. The Heretik held a Pryor Party last night, and he has a bundle of tribute links. Pam's statement about Pryor's work is excellent: "Yes, he was profane, yes, he could be outrageous, but the things that made people uncomfortable were his observations on the painful truth about cultural difference between the races at a time when sensitivies were running high and emotions were barely in check."
Richard Pryor gave us everyone we think is funny today. He was revolutionary, not only in his subject matter but in his confrontational delivery. He also deserves the credit for turning comedians into rock stars. So, in honor of Pryor, what's your favorite Pryor movie? Mine after the jump.
I saw Bustin' Loose on television when I was a little kid, and I thought Richard Pryor was the next best thing to sliced bread. I know it isn't supposed to be one of his better movies, but I would go nuts whenever I saw what I called "the school-bus movie with the funny man."
I didn't get half of it, and I certainly didn't know that, at the time of filming, he set himself on fire while freebasing, and then they dared to keep a scene in which Pryor rumbles with a budding pyromaniac. And it was wonderful that he made Miss Priss Cicely Tyson fall in love with him.
That's why I always loved Richard Pryor - because he was able to appeal to everyone, even when he told them what they didn't want to hear. He never tried to make himself liked, but he had this knack of connecting with everyone - he could set himself on fire freebasing, and then he could turn right around and release a mild comedy like Bustin' Loose.

ezra, if you don't mind me calling you that,
every stand-up comedian who came after pryor owe him big, big time.
unfortunately, they use his profanity but not his insights.
their loss.
the only movie i remember seeing pryor was silver streak. i remember the scene where he and gene wilder are trying to steal a car and wilder wants to get some piece of crap.
right next to the piece of crap auto is a corvette.
pryor says, "shit, man -- that's jacking off. this is pure pussy."
and my favorite recorded pryor moment was on sat nite live, where he and chevy chase trade racial insults about black and whites.
when chase drops the n-bomb, pryor says, "dead honkey!" and twitches his nose like a rabbit does.
rotflamo!

Bustin' Loose is of course co-written by Roger Simon, who has a respectful but not wildly interesting rememberance of him up at Pajamas Media.

I was a little confused there, and I was on the brink of an identity crisis, but I think I'll get over it.

His movies were a let down after hearing his stand up, but the man had to make a living.
As for all the comedians owing Pryor, Pryor owes Lenny Bruce and Bruce owed Mark Twain.
Pryor was a genius and is in my if there is a heaven I want to be hanging out with list, along with Twain, Kaufman, Hicks, and others too numerous to list here.
As for my favorite movie it is Blue Collar.

According to the newspaper article I saw this morning, Pryor later gave a different version of the self-immolation story. While he initially said he'd been free-basing, he later claimed he had doused himself with cognac and set himself on fire in a suicide attempt.

Maybe, just maybe, you're wondering how come you're so privileged as to receive this communiqué. Well, answer is simple, thanks to www.google.com and through the search words "blog" and "'Lenny Bruce'", I found the u.r.l to your website.
After perusing your website, I conjectured you'd be interested in my post titled, "sweetest nookie". In this post, you'll find some notions about how Lenny, were he around today, might comment about the recent kerfuffle in the Middle East.
Anyway, you'll find the hyperlink to the post just below
