From Marty Peretz
The New Republic likes to send out e-mails, allegedly penned by Peretz, previewing what's in this week's issue. The start of their latest, coming as it does straight from "Marty's" mouth, is a classic:
I suppose everybody has feelings about France. I know I do.
Reminds me of Benson from Garden State, the one who'd gotten involved in a pyramid scheme:
I'd like to talk to you... both...about a good opportunity for you and your loved ones. We all have dreams. I know I do! I'd like to talk to you about an exciting opportunity that people are talking about.

Hmm, why don't I get these emails from "Marty"? A slavishly loyal TNR-booster like myself and all. Once a long time ago I replied to a TNR email asking if I wanted to be taken off a certain list in the affirmative, but I still get several messages a week from them. Maybe I picked the exact wrong email list to get off of. This one sounds entertaining.

This wasn't because he had fireworks left over from Halloween, I take it.
"I know I do" is more than just your ordinary stamp of self-knowledge isn't it? [The girls all get up and exit to the ladies room --they know intuitively, they all do. The boys just wonder where the hell Pete's going and stay put. They really don't know.]
So Peretz has to be explicit: "I know I do." [as in "Let's go to the can on this one."]
If you don't know, you should --just to keep me company, or just to be as morally alert, or just to share what little remains of what you think might be molecules of conscience.

"I know I do" - the standard shoulder-pat and arm-wrap; "Get off me, you perv!" I mean, Marty Peretz just isn't hunky enough to bring that kind of move to fruition - Ewwwwww! I am better than that, mon pote
