Thanks Pops!

I've been puzzling over exactly what it is in Harriet Miers' e-mails that gives me the heebie-jeebies. The answer, close as I can come, is that they're not just sycophantic, but childish. It's one thing to advance your buddy, it's another thing to promote the Court Jester. I'm not gonna jump on her for liberal use of the word cool, but "Hopefully Jenna and Barbara recognize that their parents are 'cool' - as do the rest of us" is a bit bizarre. And then, after a visit to her office, she says, thanks "for taking the time to visit in the office and on the plane back - cool!" This stuff sounds like it came from the archives of the Make A Wish foundation. At least John Roberts' writings, prickish though they were, had a superior, cerebral edge to them. Miers' e-mails just lack dignity.

These emails are person-to-person, not e.g. substantive policy announcements. They are a silly thing to judge Miers on.

1: So cut her some slack.
2: It's disgusting that Congress is supposed to decide whether she's qualified to be a justice based on these.
3. This is a tactical error from the White House. I wonder if they're hoping to play the sexism card again, when Brownback et al. quite correctly bitch and moan that these are not helpful. "Your saying she's not serious in these emails is actually sexism! Remember the following irrelevant achievements of hers demonstrating her seriousness."
Really, I just wonder what they're thinking. How could this release possibly help their cause?

The White House didn't release them. The NYT got them on a Freedom of Information request.

Allen K:

With what writings should we judge Miers' qualifications?

Fact is: there's nothing out there w/her name attached -- so, in a vaccum, this is going to get an inordinate amt. of attention.

And this is the very definition of "sychopantic": "Hopefully Jenna and Barbara recognize that their parents are 'cool' - as do the rest of us."

All that's missing is the damn smiley face and the unnecessary exclamation points.

I thought that Harriet Miers blog was a joke, but now I'm wondering if it's really her. Can you tell the difference between her cards and letters to Bush and that blog?

I think it's fair to judge her on this, she's a brown-noser and do we really want that in our supreme court justices? Don't we want them to have a certain amount of dignity and professionalism? Even Scalia wouldn't stoop so low to write to Bush, "You're the greatest president ever! You're too cool!"

Posted by: Donna | Oct 11, 2005 3:34:42 PM

I don't want a justice who will vote based on who the parties to the lawsuit are. It is plain that in any instance in which Miers cares, she will do so.

How come I can't get the flat tax comment link to work?

I'm telling you, it's Amy Sedaris in disguise. She's going to show up at her committee meeting, start spouting severely scatalogical non-sequiturs nonstop, and nobody will be able to stop her...remember, you heard it here first.

The person who wrote those emails is really genuinely creepily weird.

You're absolutely right. That's why I included
2: It's disgusting that Congress is supposed to decide whether she's qualified to be a justice based on these.

Thanks for the clarification on the FOIA; that explains that.

The blog isn't her. Its speling and gramer are atrocious, and she's supposedly as picky about such things as Chief Justice Roberts.

On his ninth birthday a boy receives many presents. Two of them first seem to be less important: an old cupboard from his brother and a little Indian figure made of plastic from his best friend. But these two presents turn out to be much more magic than the rest...

Not much on my mind right now. Today was a complete loss. So it goes. I've just been sitting around waiting for something to happen. I've basically been doing nothing , but I guess it doesn't bother me.

Lâinteret du forum est precisement de susciter un debat parmi les citoyens pour que le budget et les choix quâil sous-tend soient places au c?ur du debat public. Un budget, ce sont des choix. Des choix supposent des priorites.
