Harry Reid: The Man, the Myth, the Legend

Posted by Nick Beaudrot

Via Neil the Ethical Werewolf, some good hero-worship for Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid:

In July of 1978, a man named Jack Gordon, who was later married to LaToya Jackson, offered Reid twelve thousand dollars to approve two new, carnival-like gaming devices for casino use. Reid reported the attempted bribe to the F.B.I. and arranged a meeting with Gordon in his office. By agreement, F.B.I. agents burst in to arrest Gordon at the point where Reid asked, “Is this the money?” Although he was taking part in a sting, Reid was unable to control his temper; the videotape shows him getting up from his chair and saying, “You son of a bitch, you tried to bribe me!” and attempting to choke Gordon, before startled agents pulled him off. “I was so angry with him for thinking he could bribe me,” Reid said, explaining his theatrical outburst. Gordon was convicted in federal court in 1979 and sentenced to six months in prison.

The whole article is worth a read.

Mythologizing our leaders, and evangelizing that mythology to the general public, is something Democrats could afford to do more of. Think of it as a counterattack to Bush and his brush-clearing act; a bit of local color that shows our guys (and gals) are stand-up guys (and gals) too. Between this story and the dreaded cactus-eating rabbits of Searchlight, Nevada, Harry Reid is certainly the most colurful Senate leader the country's had in a long time.

Update: commenter davidS (that's not S as in Sirota) remarks, "Prison and then marriage to LaToya? Ye Gods!" I'm not sure if that's a step up or down either. Sort of the reverse of Mark Antony's situation, where he dumped Miss America Universe in order to wed J-Lo [preemptive strike: it's just snark, Amanda, don't panic; I'm not trying to perpetuate unrealistic standards of beauty or anything like that].

Baucus, Kohl, Graham and Reid were the Democrats who voted for impeachment.

It would be disturbing, if it were true, but it's not.

Prison and then marriage to LaToya? Ye Gods!

I would be pissed too if I were a rich (and Reid is very rich) politician and someone wanted me to risk my position, wealth and freedom for $12,000.
So that makes him a hero?

Posted by: Fred Jones | Aug 7, 2005 10:49:24 PM

No, he's a hero for fighting Mafia guys who tried to blow up his car. And, more recently, for saving Social Security, but that's not what the article is about. The part about choking the lobbyist is just a cool detail.

Fred, I want you to close your eyes (trust me, I'm a professional). I want you to visualize the story that's told here. Hear the words, see the poeple involved, like a movie. Then, in your mind, I want you to replace Harry Reid with Tom DeLay. Imagine Tom DeLay throttling a lobbyist who just tried to bribe him and having to be pulled off by the FBI.

Let me know when you're done laughing.

Marcotte scares you too, huh. One of the best new voices in the blogosphere, keeping all us psuedo-feminists on our toes.

Posted by: bob mcmanus | Aug 8, 2005 2:41:59 AM

Marcotte doesn't scare me at all. I went to school with the danah boyd, so it's hard to be scared by anyone with gender politics to her right, and I'm a firm believer in non-pseudo-feminism.

But, it's easy to make an off-the-cuff remark and wind up apologizing for perpetuating the male-dominant heteronormative hierarchy, when all you're trying to do is make a wisecrack.

Marcotte doesn't scare me at all.

I don't think Mandy scares anyone. The loony left lauds anyone who is wackier, louder and will make stupid inflamatory statements that show hate for the other side and she does that quite well, just look at Dean.
Just throw in some coarse language, talk about your pussy a lot, how men suck....oh, and of lately use the term "motherfucker" when discussing others and you, too, will be a big hit with that crowd.

I LOVE that story. Read it somewhere else last week. And although the comparison is obvious, thanks NBarnes for actually spelling it out, it really brings it home.

Oh, Reid knew there was a camera there and he knew the FBI was there. He wouldn't have done anything if the FBI wasn't there to save his ass.

Kinda like Kerry in Vietnam. He hides in the cabin of the swiftboat while his crew kills all the Vietnamese on shore. Then Kerry gives the camera to a crew member, gets out his M-16 and starts walking among the bodies.

Maybe he should have put his foot on the chest of one of the corpses, flexed his muscles for the camera and said "I'm John Kerry and I'm reporting for duty!".

You know, Theresa is thinking about making John drop the 'Kerry' from John Heinz Kerry, like she did after the election. It makes the allowance checks to long to write.

'Get Stoned!'

I read that article over the weekend, and when I got to that anecdote I thought: that's the guy I want leading the Democrats in the Senate! If only he would choke the living shit out of Bill Frist.

I went to school with danah boyd, too (grad school). Can we start a club, or something?
On topic, it never ceases to amuse me how the wingnuts get their dander up about the real-life adventures of Democrats and yet are so taken in by the phony and invented mythologies of the Republican leaders. Harry Reid and John Kerry had real life colorful stories, but their supporters didn't (and don't) resort to the mindless hero worship that Bush supporters give the president.

I went to school...

*YOU* went to school!??

Posted by: Fred Jones | Aug 8, 2005 10:09:21 PM

Come now, Constantine: drinking, doing a lot of blow and failing at nearly every business venture surely qualify as colorful stories!

The only problem is Harry Reid is joined at the hip to mob lawyer/mayor Oscar Goodman, Jay Brown, and everyone involved in the current G-Sting scandal. Harry is as dirty as they come.

Posted by: steve kavanaugh | Apr 13, 2006 1:56:37 PM

What the story doesn't tell you about hero Harry, is that Oscar Goodman (now Harry's good friend), represented Sol Sayegh, one of the bribers. Sayegh's son was kidnapped and killed shortly after. Reid had been previously accused of taking bribes in the Tropicana skim deals (opposing lawyer, Oscar Goodman and Jay Brown). Reid is now partnered with Brown. Reid backed Herrera, Kenny - both going to jail. Herrera was represented by the sons of Goodman and Brown. Pin your hopes on Harry, he is a whirlpool.
