Dubya and the F-You Boys

Morning Folks, it's Nick from Electoral Math again. I'm on pager duty this weekend, which means I'm stuck inside while the Blue Angels buzz Lake Washington, the high speed boats zip along at frightening speeds, and downtown becomes a zoo. Yes, it's time again for SEAFAIR, Seattle's annual summer expression of civic pride and beer consumption. But I'll either be spending it at home or tucked in the corner of a coffee shop that has free wireless.
Anyway, this has to have the GOP worried:
Bush has lost support most dramatically ... among men with a high school education or less.
In The Two Americas, Stan Greenberg calls the white portion of this demographic the "F-You Boys". "They think President George W. Bush is their guy," he writes. "Everything about the Bush presidency seems to resonate with these voters. These white men, without college degrees, many blue collar, married, under fifty years of age, mainly with young families, like the style, values, substance, and prejudices of todays Republican politics." Post-9/11, and during the early stages of the Iraq War, the F-You Boys had higher support for Bush than all groups except "The Faithful" -- voters who go to church once a week or more. But now that the "Bring 'em on" foreign policy isn't working, it looks like they've ready to give Bush himself the big F-You.

We keep patting ourselves on the back for W's slide in the polls and noting that this demographic or that demographic is turning against W. The problem is that W won't run again and it's unlikely that the blue collar, young male group is going to switch over to the D column in '06 or '08 just because W is finally revealed as a blue-blooded jackass. I'm afraid that they're just going to vote for the next GOP criminal who's shoveling the same load of elephant poop as W and his gang.

Not necessarily. Lots of these guys went for Clinton in 92; their loathing for the more patrician Bush 41 was visceral, and the Gennifer Flowers stuff if anything worked to Clinton's advantage.
Of course when the gays-in-the-military issue arose, they all freaked. If you were a Clinton supporter in 1994, they'd wonder aloud if you weren't gay yourself.

Yes, but we aren't likely to field another manly-man type Democrat for president. I liked all of the big four in the last field, but I'm a pointy-headed, over-educated, liberal girl. I still think that it's likely that this same demographic is more likely to vote for the Idiot Santorum than even some Democratic Zell-clone.
My view is colored by my experience because in '92 I was working on an Army post in Europe and those blue-collar manly men were wildly anti-Clinton, even before the don't-ask-don't-tell fiasco.
Also, I made the mistake of reading this month's Harpers and am now spiralling down into deep depression just from reading Lapham's editorial at the beginning without even reaching Mark Crispin Miller's polemic. It probably doesn't matter who votes for whom, the Idiot Santorum will be our next Fearless Leader and the PRI, I mean GOP, will control the country, albeit with a new leader every nice, orderly 8 years from now until the next century. Unless global warming gets us first.
A pessimist is never disappointed.

Most people lack the ability to pay the necessary attention to detail required to realize that voting for a pussy like John Kerry is the most important thing they could ever do.
