Supply-Side Wonka
Posted by Nick Beaudrot
Could there be a movie that more exhibited the conservative world view than the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? [Caution: spoilers ahead]
First off, Charlie's family isn't well-off, but the fact that they stick together as a family is more important having money. Charlie knows he only gets one Wonka bar each year, but his grandparents urge him that he has as much a of a chance to get a Golden Ticket as anyone (just have faith!). Meanwhile, Papa Bucket is a victim of technological advancement -- which is a good thing (the advancement, not the victimhood) -- but he seem to just take it on the chin, asking get his wife to "make the cabbage soup a little thinner", rather than looking for some sort of unemployment insurance. And of course, Charlie, a born-again choclatier who just needs the right opportunity, is rewarded for his faith with a Golden Ticket. He ponders selling it and using the profits to help his family ... something almost anyone in the Buckets' situation would consider ... but his grandparents urge him "don't give away that ticket for something as common as money". What sacrifice for the greater good!
Once inside the factory, all the other snooty kids -- false messiahs, if you will -- get their just desserts [pun fully intended], and the one kid with true faith is rewarded in the end ... but he turns it down! Why? He can't take his family with him. What loyalty and sacrifice for one's loved ones! Finally, after turning Wonka into the prodigal son, Charlie and his family reap their reward, and everyone lives happily ever after. All through the healing power of faith in chocolate.
Awesome.
Combined with all the fancy "W" logos, I think it's clear that the subliminal message machine of Hollywood is no longer trying to turn us into communists; it's trying to turn is into conservatives.
Also, no one told me the Fed chair was moonlighting in Hollywood:

So the fact that all the rich people are horrible monsters living off the sweat of others' work while all the poor people are good honest folk who've been ground down by cutthroat business practices (Charlie's family is put out of work not because of "technological innovation," but because of industrial espionage, remember) means absolutely nothing? Huh. Whatever.
The movie - like the book it's based on - has a very Horatio Alger/rags-to-riches/hard-working-poor-people- rewarded-in-the-end ethos to it, but this has nothing to do whatsoever with supply-side and everything to do with the fact that it's a fairy tale, and fairy tales are overwhelmingly and traditionally populist. In fact, supply-side has nothing to do with the inherent worth of work and everything to do with the bizarre logistics of rewarding corporations in place of relieving the working class employed by them. This is one of the weirdest misreadings of a piece of pop culture I've seen in a while.

Agreed. However, when you have little and are desperate to push an unpopular agenda, you turn to invention and conspiracy.

Sorry for extra post, but a point I wanted to make about Hollywood and how aligned with the left they really are is the fact that after four years and many heroic tales available, there has been NOT ONE movie with anything to do with the World Trade Center bombings, or the other Arab Jihadist bombings experienced for the last couple of decades.
I believe to do so would force them to make Islamic fundamentalists the "bad guys", and they are unwilling to do so. Never mind that they killed 3,000 civilians without warning on our own soil. Forget that they blew up and killed over 200 marines in their barracks as they slept, Blew up African embassies, etc.
Yes, they will tell you they hate Christians, but those Islamists seem to be "OK" by them!
What part of "UnAmerican" don't you understand?

Hollywood is absurdly successful, RZ. Because people want to buy their products. That's capitalism for you. Funny that you complain about the result of the system when you whore for it all the while.

RZ, you are aware that the paranoid right-wing fantasy you're invoking - that of the liberal Hollywood conspiracy - is also a Jewish liberal Hollywood conspiracy? How is it that this treacherous Tinseltown cabal is holding back the flood of great 9-11 epics out of love for their Islamist brethren while at the same time they're hating Mel Gibson's deep abiding Christianity out of their spiteful Jewishness? You can't pick and choose your delusions.
(All this aside, Hollywood produces plenty of Arab terrorists. Ever watch an episode of 24?)

I might note that it's pretty damn funny that you followed this up with the "hidden cabal of sneaky liberals are holding back the 9/11-triumphalist movies" line.

Hollywood is absurdly successful, RZ. Because people want to buy their products.
"More than anything (the slump) is product driven and that's far better news for Hollywood than if it was a cultural change," he said. "Product can be fixed. A few good movies can change that around." (http://money.cnn.com/2005/06/16/news/newsmakers/boxoffice_sales/index.htm)
On the other hand, Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Crist" has garnered over 350 million on domestic sales alone. By the time foreign sales and DVD sales worldwide are included, it may total as much as 3/4 of a billion....all from an independent film. Now you were saying about the free market?

Eastwood's boxing movie:
Most white people who live in trailer parks are lazy welfare cheats and deserve to be there. But, if they work really hard --no, work themselves to death-- they can be successful!

That's more Calvinist propaganda than Reaganist propaganda, but yeah, I'll buy that take, Roxanne.
(Unless I completely misinterpreted it, I think Nick's point in his previous post was that Calvinism meshes well/fails to conflict with current Republican economic dogma, not that they're equivalent. Nonetheless, I feel it's important to make the distinction.)
Posted by: Iron Lungfish | Jul 24, 2005 3:57:16 PM
I think Nick meant to draw attention to the similarities between the movie and Republican economic policy in that both rely on a combination of faith and fantastic luck to overcome financial hardship. I think that's a vaild point, but my reading of the movie casts it more closely as advice on raising children. Namely, not spoiling them. Also the contradiction between this and the idea of how candy should be enjoyed.
I doubt whether most people, Nick included, would consider Tim Burton a conservative, but he is free to contradict me.
The "Ws" in the movie make me think how childish our commander and chief is.

Folks, no one noticed how far my tongue was planted into my cheek on this one? Has no one seen Chasing Amy? Sheesh.
That said, there's a grain of truth behind my faux conspiracy theory.
I know that Charlie has nothing to do with supply-side economics. I keep using the term "supply-side" because supply-side economics, like the notion that conservative economic policy will benefit most on the low-to-middle income end of the spectrum, like the notion that class is mobile, is to some extent a fairy tale. Tax cuts don't pay for themselves, real wages have either stagnated or been in decline during modern conservative presidencies, and income mobility is becoming less and less common. What's more, the idea of supply-side jesus is an anathema to liberal Christians.
I still think the new Charlie is conservative, mostly in its rags-to-riches elements, the notion that the Golden Ticket is worth more to Charlie than lifting his family out of poverty, and his loyalty to his family over chocolate.

Here is a comparison from the movie. Willy Wonka is kind of Michael Jacksonish. Michael Jackson is a homosexual-pediphile. Homosexuals are Democrats.
So the Democrats are trying to lure the children to their chocolate factory so they can molest them.
Ah-ha!

Well Nick, that's what you get for trying to be sardonic.
I don't wade too far into Mr. Zimmerman's posts, but since 9/11 "the bad guy" in a number of films and tv shows has shifted to "Arab Terrorist" from, ...well, "Arab Terrorist" for one thing, but also "weird Euro-terrorist" and "South American drug lord". I'm not surprised that there's been a dearth of 9/11 fictional stories - nearing the 4 year mark, most of us are still just beginning to wrap our heads around the magnitude of the tragedy and indeed, your average Lifetime or Network TV movie would probably seem crass and melodramatic. And anyway, to what end? Is there something a 9/11 movie would tell us we don't already know - about ourselves, about the events, about life and death? Hollywoood, I would argue, is giving us what we want - easy escapism and cheap moralizing, often in one handy package.
And on that note, having not seen Anna Wintour and the Chocolate Factory, I can only say the story has always seemd a little odd -the fun movie about candy that tells you how bad candy is. Or how bad kids are. I lose track. In a summer of depressing epics with curious morality plays (Star Wars, Batman, Crash, just for starters), having Charlie fall into the same odd politics wouldn't surprise me.

And actually, a movie is being made now on 9/11. Oliver Stone directing, and it's not supposed to be a conspiracy type movie. Something about 2 guys in the building that day and what they go through emotionally.
