The Truth About Beavis and Butthead

Thanks to Karl Rove I was thinking about hippy-dippy self-esteem psycho-babble last night. He’s pretty clearly trying to link us to the Effeminate Hippy Stereotype. And when I think of Effeminate Hippy Stereotypes, I think of Mr. VanDrisen from Beavis and Butthead.

And this is the truth about that show:

Beavis and Butthead are supposed to be Bill and Ted, as in Keanu Bill and Ted. Besides resemblances in their images, consider that Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure was a movie about a couple of Gen X types and how they represent a triumph of the hippy cultural movement. Beavis and Butthead were Mike Judge’s rejection of that idea.

First, what was the basic plot of Bill and Ted? Bill and Ted are basically Beavis and Butthead types, but slightly less malicious and prone to violence, although almost certainly as stupid and addicted to the MTV lifestyle. They are going to be repressed from their self expression by a couple of parents who want to send them off to military school, or as in the case of Beavis and Butthead, are totally absent in their self absorption. But then a hippie from the future, played by George Carlin, comes and rescues them because they are going to write a rock song that creates world peace. Total apology for the Hippy movement. What this is trying to say metaphorically is that Gen X may not seem that aware and involved, but their hippy dippy sense of tolerance and inclusiveness will usher in an era of peace.

Mike Judge takes a sledge hammer to that notion. He sees B and ‘Ted as brain dead walking consumerist zombies. What Bill and Ted’s creators saw as open mindedness, Judge saw as apathy. This of course had the obvious effects of a propensity for violence due to a complete disregard for the well being of everything, including themselves. They are hypnotized by the youth culture and turned into consumerist zombies, wasting their money on band T-shirts or concert tickets. The lack of any attempt to “repress their self expression” has left them at the mercy of their basest desires.

Or maybe Judge just thought he could make some good money showing two cartoon characters kick each other in the nads, because after all, that IS hilarious!

Man, I used to love that show.

"Huh-huh... you said 'consumerist zombies.'"

"Yeah! White Zombie! YEAAAAAHHHHH!!!!"

"Shut up, Beavis! He's talking about the empty, materialist lives foisted on American youth by mass commercialization and loss of core values!"

"Huh?"

Did the first Beavis and Butthead cartoon, "Frog Baseball" (which might bear some resemblance to a reputed boyhood activity of George W. Bush) predate Bill and Ted's movies?

No, you fucktard, Beavis and Butthead were based on people that Mike Judge knew in high school. Jumping Jeeebus Christ, I bet this was written by a first year college student.
