Yes, But The Peach People Are Exterminating the Blueberryites
Shakespeare's Sister is getting a bit tired of her comrades-in-pigment:
If you want to know why I prefer to identify as Kinda Peachy, eschewing labels like white and straight and all that junk, it’s because even I’m starting to think of straight white folks as being completely and utterly fucking nuts. Yes, I know there are plenty of decent straight white liberal people, and I also know there are sickos and weirdos and freaks of every race and creed and orientation, but between the evil dipshits* running the country, the crackpot Dominionists trying to Jesusize the country, and the slew of deranged psychos that have been in the news lately (BTK serial killer, the dude who kept his dead mom in the basement in a chunk of ice, etc.), I’m just going to pack my bags for a permanent move to Kindapeachistan.
Considering the story she flags as the coup de grace, a child abuse/bestiality cult with a Texas Chainsaw Massacre level of sadism and widespread community acquiescence, I can't blame her. But I've been hearing this sort of sentiment a lot lately, and it's time to stop it. Human beings, I fear, are beasts. Not all of us, not most of us, but there does seem to be some bit of the brain that, once engaged, renders us capable and even desirous of all manner of interpersonal atrocities. That's not a white thing though. Take a jaunt through Sierra Leone's recent history and their squads of limb-hacking child soldiers, wander through the Bosnian game of forcing Kosovo's Muslim men to rape their daughters on pain of the daughter's death, stroll through World War II for...well, you get the idea.
This world's "never agains", which always happen again, prove exactly how porous the barrier between higher being and deranged id really is. They cross race, era, and nationality. It's in all of us. That's why part of the role of government, and certainly of powerful, comfortable countries like America, is to strengthen the barrier and occasionally force civilization back into the brute. And if that means jamming radios in Rwanda, strafing Janjiweed in Sudan, jailing sadist nutballs in Louisiana, or blowing up Bosnia, then so be it. Because, in the end, this is a human thing. It's not about whites or blacks or browns, no group I'm aware of has yet kept their hands out of the blood bucket for any sustained period of time. That's why humanity a whole must make a point of slapping people's hands away when they lapse and once again reach for the gore. Everyone has their relapses but, happily, we don't all have them at once. And therein, if our governments were only courageous enough to look, lies salvation.

For a serious (maybe too serious--and very long) exploration of the moral justifications of violence, especially in defense of others, you might be interested in William Vollmann's "Rising Up and Rising Down."

Hey, You're pretty good. :)
I don't think we are all wolves in sheep's clothing, the Nazis encountered many who simply couldn't do some of the jobs. But I don't think the conscience-stricken were any where near a majority. And then there are those famous fake prison and electroshock experiments.
Current Europeans seem kinda pacified.
Rationally I understand that I have a false belief that any individual or group can unpredictably go berserker at any instant but I still wear glasses at any dinner table for fear of aimed forks and really don't like other's cars at my side on the freeway. If you think it is mere projection that I worry about Joe Citizen getting an urge to ram me at 80 mph, then I guess y'all then have to worry about me. :)

Ezra, you're totally right, which makes me think you might not have read my original Kinda Peachy post.
It was about choosing to be a particular kind of human - one who is not racist, not homophobic, not sexist, etc., and I noted that it was a choice that could appeal to humans of all races, colors, creeds, etc. "Peachy" was chosen not because of my particular skin color, but because of its double-meaning - it was more a declaration that I was resisting the types of the attitudes that lead to "never agains," and an invitation to others to do the same under our own banner that supercedes the distinctions of race, color, creed, etc. It was a cheeky concept that really wasn't about choosing to not be white.
The flawed nature of humankind was in fact the whole point of being Kinda Peachy:
[Y]ou gotta be flawed but inimitably diggable, baby.
As for me, I’m a fat, broke, godless, underachieving, overeducated, opinionated Kinda Peachy honorary dyke and raging red state liberal who’s married to an immigrant, still smokes an occasional cigarette, likes to say fuck a lot, and believes that everyone has the right to be just as fucked-up and as inordinately happy as I am.
You got a problem with that?
So I still stand by my Kinda Peachiness. I know it seems like it was just about race in the post you're excerpting today, but that's why I keep a giant picture of a peach linking to the original post on the site, just in case.... ;-)

You're right -- I plead guilty to missing the original.

It's okay. I'll let you beat me up a little to make a good point. But I wish you weren't accusing me of exterminating the Blueberryites! LOL.
I LOVE the Blueberryites!

First, you tell us that you are embarrassed to be white, so you make up some other term, and then spend the rest of the time telling us how you are not a racist.
Now *I'm* embarrassed that you are white.

As I said, it was cheekiness. This whole thing has been taken a bit too seriously. It has kind of been a running joke on my blog, which is why I used it in my post today.
I've also been made an honorary dyke by my gay readers for being a staunch supporter of gay rights. When I invoke that also-running joke, it doesn't mean I'm a self-loathing straight person.
Yeesh.

Got any "running jokes" about Blacks? How funny would that be?

Ezra, I'm so sorry you got stuck with Bobby Z. when Pandagon switched over to verified comments. I have to say, we really don't miss him at all.
By the way, Bob, did you ever figure out what Supreme Court case from 50 years ago is the one you're all upset about "activist judges" deciding, since you've assured me that it's not Brown v. Board of Education, but another case entirely?
Posted by: Mnemosyne | May 19, 2005 8:54:36 PM
"By the way, Bob, did you ever figure..."
I hope you are talking to Zimmerman, cause I don't remember that conversation. However, I can usually in any historical year find a SCOTUS decision I don't like, and can attribute it to activist judges. In case Zimmerman gets stuck.

Seems to me I recall something about how violence is our default reaction which is curtailed/modified as appropriate, etc. This has a tendency not to work so well when we're under stress. So, if you ever wondered where "chill" came from .....(What can I come up with on short notice ?)

Just to note that the Bosnia allusion is a bit strange -- the Bosnians had nothing to do with the Kosovo conflict (those were the Serbs); indeed, people who now self-identify as Bosnians (as opposed to Bosnian-plus-modifier, i.e. Bosnian Serbs or Bosnian Croats) are more likely than not to be Muslim. So the notion of Bosnians forcing Kosovar Albanians (Muslims) to rape their daughters seems a bit perverse, although there was certainly sexual abuse as a component of Serb tactics in both Bosnia proper and Kosovo. Bombing Bosnia during the Bosnian war may have deterred the Bosnian and (then) Yugoslav Serbs responsible for many of the atrocities and war crimes in that conflict, but would not have helped the victims much. Bombing Bosnia during the Kosovo conflict would have been nonsensical. Like your blog but your Balkans history needs work!

I have to say, we really don't miss him at all.
I was thinking the same thing about you.
Ya' know, the conversation was cordial and between Shakespear's Sister and myself, and then you stick your big fat head in the middle with a snide personal attack that adds nothing. Is that your goal....simply to butt in and pick fights? That it?

Now *I'm* embarrassed that you are white.
I don't know if I'd call that cordial...

Great post Ezra. I agree completely. It is just as foolish to pretend that any group is all angels as it is to pretend that any group is all devils.
While I am sure we disagree on how to deal with this issue frequently, it is always good to remember that most of us, regardless of political affiliation, are on the same side in this.

Good to see that Zimmer is still a moron. There is so little consistency in this world today, he is like a shining beacon of stupidity warning others to stay away from the rocks.
Posted by: Col Bat Guano | May 20, 2005 3:13:31 PM
Same ol' Bat. When you have nothing to say, just let the hatred out in a personal attack. I'm not some pansy on Pandagon. I can take it.
Say, did you get tired of the Pandagon's articles about Amanda and her pussy? Smoking in bars? Recording artists or her cat? All of those interesting and important issues? You fit right in.
Posted by: Robert Zimmerman | May 20, 2005 3:47:06 PM
"I'm not some pansy on Pandagon."
No, you are a pansy everywhere. A rather dense and uninteresting one at that. Hope I didn't hurt your tender conservative feelings. I know how sensitive you gentle flowers are with all that liberal media and blogs attacking you.
Posted by: Col Bat Guano | May 21, 2005 3:38:26 PM
Shorter Col: "I hate you"
So what? Now, if you only had an issue to discuss...
Posted by: Robert Zimmerman | May 21, 2005 9:47:14 PM
Here's an issue for you Bob. Which is the more pressing issue: Newsweek ran a poorly sourced story that may have caused some riots in Afghanistan and Pakistan or that 37 detainees have died in U.S. custody there, all without ever receiving any form of due process?
Posted by: Col Bat Guano | May 22, 2005 1:29:49 AM
Well, Colonel,
A fair question.
You are asking me to rank evil. The riots produced 16 deaths (all without due process as well) and countless maimed. Both of these are heinous and not mutually exclusive of my disdain. Why give a pass to either one as you seem to have done with Newsweak?
I have always advocated a vigorous investigation to find those responsible and prosecute. What else are you going to do to deter this from happening again?
And as far as Newsweak, they also need to be held accountable.

Nice attempt at moral equivalence you got there. Most of those killed in the riots were protesters shot by the local police, our supposed allies. My question was which issue was more pressing: U.S. soldiers torturing detainees to death or Newsweek reporting a poorly sourced, but emminently plausible story about U.S. soldiers abusing the Koran?
