No on Bolton

Democrats voted to reject cloture on Bolton, in other words, they're filibustering him until they get the NSA intercepts and other documents that have thus far been withheld. Looks like the opposition party has decided against going quietly into the sweet night.

Good for them. Indeed, I think this may be more important than it appears on first glance. Aside from the obvious utility of holding up Bolton, the power balance in the post-compromise Senate was really up for grabs. The language of the resolution was so vague as to make it entirely possible that Republican moderates, and thus the Republican majority, had actually increased their power over the Democrats, that they could demand "good behavior" in return for abiding by the compromise. Rejecting Bolton -- with a filibuster no less! -- proves that the Democrats don't see what happened in the judicial fight as binding them in future confrontations. They're still on the attack and Frist is still stuck pathetically calling for bipartisan comity.

Yes, I agree that someone needed to grab the momentum, and the Dems seems to have done it here. Or if not, at least they seem to be daring Frist to call them out. It's a good spot for it, too. Most Americans could care less about who the UN ambassador is. I don't think GOP leadership could rally any kind of obstructionism charge that would connect with any voters. Another good call by Reid.

Filibuster, filibuster, filibuster

This is solidifying the role of the Democrats as obstructionists in the public's mind and will hurt them in the next election...

Which side "won" in the filibuster compromise is still up for debate. Bill Frist will probably make a push to declare the deal "null and void" since the Democrats are continuing the filibuster on Bolton. The Democrats may have a case since the nuclear option applies specifically to judges. However, I think the compromise deal puts all the power in the hands of the so-called moderate Republicans. They'll be the ones deciding between Frist and the Democrats on whether the deal has been breached. Any deal that relies on the so-called moderate Republicans to do the right thing is probably not a good deal for Democrats.

They're not filibustering- they're waiting to vote until they think that they've gotten pertinent information.

Didn't hurt the Republicans. They initiated at least six filibusters against Clinton appointees. Orin Hatch even changed the rules so that a "secret" vote by a single senator could block a nomination from getting out of committee. He held up Ron White and Helen White nominations for years this way, and those judges had pretty solid bipartisan support. This little proceedure worked so well for the obstructionist Republicans that they kept using to hold up over sixty other nominations.
Oddly enough, Hatch abandoned this old trick when Bush took office.

They didn't just come out of a very public fight over using filibuster on judicial nominations, either.
Good luck.
