Mom and Apple Pie. In Space.
The Air Force believes "we must establish and maintain space superiority," Gen. Lance Lord, who leads the Air Force Space Command, told Congress recently. "Simply put, it's the American way of fighting." Air Force doctrine defines space superiority as "freedom to attack as well as freedom from attack" in space.
No no no. That's the Empire's, or at the least, the Enterprise's way of fighting. So unless America really does transubstantiate into our pop culture, there's nothing Norman Rockwell about a moon bristling with Lockheed-Martin produced weaponry.
Update: Suzanne Nossel makes the great point that nobody, in fact, can attack us from space. Maybe this is some sort of aftershock from Ronald Reagan's obsession with an alien invasion?

We can be attacked from space. It takes relatively low-level space tech too disrupt our sattelite network and gone, at least tempoarily, would be our GPS/telecomm infrastucture with huge economic consequences.
Having an offensive capability in space is probably one of the most effective arms control mechanisisms we could have on a go forward basis. The Chinese, and most of the rest of the developed world, are more vulnerable than we are. North Korea and Iran will go nowhere from here without space tech. Twenty years from now we won't have to threaten to invade or nuke. We can box an enemy in without killing a sinlge person or using sanctions that punish the innocent and enrich the powerful.

Is attacking our space based infrastructure attacking us from space, or attacking us in space?
Currently, no one has the acknowledged ability to attack us from space - meaning so-called "space bombers" doesn't yet exist, and none of our current "enemies" are quite there yet. Sure, maybe the chinese could be hurling hand grenades out of a capsule sometime in the very near future - but most everyone who even has the technology to get into orbit is at least currently on our side.
The Air Force prattling on about space superiority is - in my completely
unbiased, and totally uneducated opinion - just another funding ploy.

Control of space will be a decisive advangate to any future battlefield. As signifigant as control of the air was in the 20th century. Perhaps a little thought at dealing with this reality by the air force is not a bad thing.

Wouldn't it be better if we, I don't know, made friends with China and Russia instead of just assuming that we will one day have to bomb nukular heck out of them with our gizmoray? is that too Utopian? Diplomacy instead of ray guns and missile shields?

I dunno. I think space superiority is an area that is too often overlooked in our defense spending. I mean, we can't rely on the Stargate forever. Sure, we can explore other planets that way, but eventually, we're gonna piss the Gou'ald off, and they're gonna send their motherships after us, and without a space based defense platform, or at least, some sort of Ancient weaponry, we're screwed.
More funding for the X-303!

Space superiority is not our birthright, but it is our destiny.

Overlooked ? The strategic advantage of "high ground" (metaphorically speaking). Not likely. Funding ploy ? Yes. And no, Star Wars tech is not here today ; which won't stop the purchasing of non-functional trash.
