Tech Support
I'm getting complaints that clicking on "Read More..." vaults you to the top of the page. This isn't happening for me, but it's widespread enough that I should try and fix it anyway. So all you html geniuses out in the audience -- any idea what's going on? if it helps, something weird happens when you click "All Done!" and it only shows a couple posts down the page. I don't know if that's connected, but there it is.
Also -- the picture. Some seem to love it, others seem to hate it. So I'm putting it to vote. Should it stay? Should it be replaced with another, less suggestive, photo? Or will opening-day concerns over my buttoning habits evaporate amid the flood of good posts I'm planning to write? The power is yours.
Also, it got a bit buried today, so if you missed it, I think this Goldwater factoid is interesting.

"...suggestive?"
Uhmmmm, methinks that some people need to get a life.
Ditch it or keep it. I couldn't care less either way.
But, then, I'm a married heterosexual male.
If you get the right type of response then maybe you want to keep it.

Here's what I think you should do - request submissions of artistic impressions of your photo, and if somebody submits something you like better, go for it.
I won't be able to submit any art, I'm out of playdough.

It's happening for me, at work, using IE. I don't recall it happening this morning, at home, when I was using Firefox.
Keep the photo. It flatters you. :)

Suggestive???????????? Nuts--- Keep the image. personally I find it interesting to put a face to anyones' writing or work. Ignore the prudes and moral police; there much more important things they should be concerned with.

First off, congrats on the new blog.
As for the photo, leave it. Maybe photoshop some chest hair in there, though...
As for the "read more" issue, it does it (i.e. the problem) for me on my win 2k machine/firefox browser.

Dude, relax, keep the pic. Horatio and I were just fucking with the new guy

Hey -- we're all about Democracy here. What the people want, they get. Except for nudes. No nudes.

As I said earlier, Top button, Bad!
Your picture is way better than Josh Marshall's, and he seems to be doing okay with his blog thingy. You look fine, heterosexually speaking.

Ezra, it looks like there's an HTML error in your anchor tag. Specifically, the problem seems to be here :
<a href="#" name="ext0003347278"
onclick="showHide(3347278,'http://ezraklein.typepad.com/blog/2005/01/welcome.html',this,'entry');return
false;">Read More...</a>
</div>
<div id="extText3347278" style="display: none">
Some browsers are interpreting both the onclick and href portions of the tag. The result is that the entry is opening up, but the "#" gets appended to the end of the source URL (in this case the homepage) and the user gets tossed back up to the top of the page. What you probably want to do is dig into the template and find which MT tag creates the "extText3347278" that's in the following div tag and then just append it to the href to create this :
<a href="#extText3347278" name="ext0003347278"
onclick="showHide(3347278,'http://ezraklein.typepad.com/blog/2005/01/welcome.html',this,'entry');return
false;">Read More...</a>
</div>
<div id="extText3347278" style="display: none">
That should work.
Also, the homepage pic makes you look like a whore.

Suggestive? Not by a long shot in this day and age!!! Keep it.
Posted by: Linda | Jan 25, 2005 3:30:26 PM
it's the # in the href that's putting you back at the top of the page. you ought to be able to just leave it back (despite some WYSIWYG editors insistence on putting # as a dummy href value for javascripted links)

Suggestive?
I don't think so much suggestive, but I do think the idea of "blogger beefcake pics" is something we certainly don't want to encourage under any circumstances. Imagine Hugh Hewitt following suit when he catches wind of the new trend in two years. And we certainly don't want to give Sullivan ideas that he would enthusiastically adopt.
I'm just saying if you go with the top button unbuttoned so brazenly, throw in some gold chains and chest hair.

Greg -- the code doesn't read like that though. Here's how it is in my Main Index template:
"
onclick="showHide(<$MTEntryID$>,'<$MTEntryPermalink$>',this,'entry');return
false;">Read More...
<$MTEntryMore$>
"
onclick="showHide(<$MTEntryID$>,0,this,'entry');return true;">All
done!
Any ideas?

Try changing this :
<a href="#"
To this :
<a href="#extText<$MTEntryID$>"

Stay, stay! It's a -good- picture.
I like it, at least.
Posted by: JamesK | Jan 25, 2005 4:49:17 PM
Being The Girlfriend, I decree the picture sexy. It must stay. That is all.

You know, Ezra, John Ashcroft would cover up the bottom quarter of your picture with a drape.

Site works fine so far. OSX / Camino
as for the pic, you meet the internet dress code, you tiger, you.

Congrats and best wishes on your solo venture, from a mostly lurking Pandagon regular.
As far as the picture? Just take the damn shirt OFF already!

Lovesick Alien, you're right, that would be a way better picture. :)

I think the picture looks unprofessional. This isn't a modelling site, or your personal journal. I mean, look at the pictures they put up next to columns in newspapers. Even the best ones don't look like glamour shots, because that's not what it's about. Y'see what I mean?
Posted by: Denise | Jan 25, 2005 10:53:23 PM
Glamour shot? Because the shirt isn't buttoned all the way to the top? Yes, let's look at the pictures used for syndicated columnists. Not a pretty sight. Buckley looks like madman.

But check out Cynthia Tucker. Unbuttoned shirt!

And c'mon, somebody here's seen Malkin's walking-towards-the-wind shot.
Posted by: Ezra | Jan 26, 2005 1:25:04 AM
Congrats on your new venture, Ezra!
And please keep the pictures as it is...chest hair is gross (yuck!) Also, since The Girlfriend likes it, it should stay as is.

If that is your pajama top, then I say keep the pic. I like the idea of a blogger posting in his jammies. And your smiling visage is a refreshing change from the contemplative although dearly loved Josh "Head in My Hands" Marshall.
I've added you to my tabbed browsing Blog folder in Safari. Look forward to your insightful posts.
